Today’s Class Work

Step 1:  Finish drafting your own letter.  If this is done, move on to Step 2.

Step 2:  After peer editing John’s letter as a class, your first task is to SELF-EDIT your own letter.  Use the   checklist below to guide your self-check of your work:

  1. Make sure that you have the proper letter format.  This means that you should have…
    1. The date, September 6, 2016, at the very top of your paper, on the right hand side
    2. Your name, and the address of the school on the next line on the left hand of the screen
    3. A salutation (Dear___,)
    4. Paragraphs SHOULD NOT be indented!
  2. You should have a three-part thesis statement
  3. There should be NO CONTRACTIONS! Find them all and write them out!
  4. Check for run-on sentences, and also check to see that you have used proper punctuation
  5. Make sure that body paragraphs have a strong topic sentence and that all detail sentences in the paragraph support your topic sentence
  6. Make sure that your body paragraphs have enough details, and are 5-7 sentences in length
  7. The first sentence in your conclusion should restate your thesis
  8. After your conclusion, have a closing (like, Sincerely,)
  9. Run a quick spell check
  10. Make sure that your letter is in size 12 Times New Roman font

Step 3:  If you have not yet completed the Level Up activity from the online textbook on Primary and Secondary sources, please do so now, following the instructions posted on Friday.

Step 4:  Choose your primary sources.  If they are here, or if you know for certain which artifacts you are using, write or type what each artifact is, and your reasons for including these items in your time capsule (2-3 sentences for each artifact will do!).

Step 5:  Begin putting things inside of your time capsule.  The following will need to be included:

  1. Your Time Capsule Questionnaire
  2. A piece of yarn measuring your height
  3. 5 artifacts and their explanations
  4. A signed copy of your letter (we will print these on TUESDAY!)

Step 6:  Decorate your time capsule.  You may choose to bring a variety of supplies to do so, such as clip art, pictures from magazines, stickers, pictures, etc.  Mrs. Ford will provide markers, scissors, and glue.
