August 31, 2016: Class Activities

  • If your letter is done (and it should be!) we are printing it today.  Be sure to follow all instructions Mrs. Ford goes through in order to print.
  • You will be measured with yarn today…this goes in your capsule.
  • Be sure that you have placed your 5 artifacts inside of your envelope, have written your artifact explanations (what it is/why you chose it) for each, and have decorated your time capsule.
  • When you are done decorating your time capsule, and all other tasks are complete, turn it in.  Remember, if you do not turn your project in today, you may finish it on your own and turn it in no later than September 6, 2016!
  • If you have completed your project, choose from the following activities below:
    • Grammar Blast (grammar games):  https://www.eduplace.com/kids/hme/6_8/grammar/
    • Do a web search of “Western Pennsylvania Time Capsules” and read news articles about local time capsules… try Centralia, PA, Greene County, PA, Heinz History Center
    • Explore the online texbook at my.hrw.com

August 30, 2016: Class Activities

Today in class, your goal is to move forward in your Time Capsule Project.  Use yesterday’s post as a starting point to guide you through what comes next.

Once all of yesterday’s activities are complete, begin working on your time capsule itself, decorating it, and filling it.

  • We will all be measured with yarn tomorrow
  • We all should be done writing today

When decorating your time capsule, think of ways that you can make it represent you.  Clip art, magazine cut outs, pictures, etc…be creative!  Decorating your capsule is worth 15 points, and time and effort is the biggest factor in that grade!

Tomorrow is our last day in class to work on our project.  Everything is due by September 6, 2016!

Today’s Class Work

Step 1:  Finish drafting your own letter.  If this is done, move on to Step 2.

Step 2:  After peer editing John’s letter as a class, your first task is to SELF-EDIT your own letter.  Use the   checklist below to guide your self-check of your work:

  1. Make sure that you have the proper letter format.  This means that you should have…
    1. The date, September 6, 2016, at the very top of your paper, on the right hand side
    2. Your name, and the address of the school on the next line on the left hand of the screen
    3. A salutation (Dear___,)
    4. Paragraphs SHOULD NOT be indented!
  2. You should have a three-part thesis statement
  3. There should be NO CONTRACTIONS! Find them all and write them out!
  4. Check for run-on sentences, and also check to see that you have used proper punctuation
  5. Make sure that body paragraphs have a strong topic sentence and that all detail sentences in the paragraph support your topic sentence
  6. Make sure that your body paragraphs have enough details, and are 5-7 sentences in length
  7. The first sentence in your conclusion should restate your thesis
  8. After your conclusion, have a closing (like, Sincerely,)
  9. Run a quick spell check
  10. Make sure that your letter is in size 12 Times New Roman font

Step 3:  If you have not yet completed the Level Up activity from the online textbook on Primary and Secondary sources, please do so now, following the instructions posted on Friday.

Step 4:  Choose your primary sources.  If they are here, or if you know for certain which artifacts you are using, write or type what each artifact is, and your reasons for including these items in your time capsule (2-3 sentences for each artifact will do!).

Step 5:  Begin putting things inside of your time capsule.  The following will need to be included:

  1. Your Time Capsule Questionnaire
  2. A piece of yarn measuring your height
  3. 5 artifacts and their explanations
  4. A signed copy of your letter (we will print these on TUESDAY!)

Step 6:  Decorate your time capsule.  You may choose to bring a variety of supplies to do so, such as clip art, pictures from magazines, stickers, pictures, etc.  Mrs. Ford will provide markers, scissors, and glue.

Bell Work and Class Activities for August 25, 2016

The Promethean board is still down 🙁

So, I will use the blog to communicate to you your bell work activity and today’s class assignments.

Bell Work:

I have created a template for you for typing your rough draft and final copy of your time capsule letter. PLEASE FOLLOW ALL OF THE DIRECTIONS BELOW!

Click the link below to access the template:

https://docs.google.com/a/cmsd.k12.pa.us/document/d/1iY98ZgLk-0jqZNGzBeN28C2HXDVY6sGtfaR5IbPE9y4/edit?usp=sharing

DO NOT BEGIN CHANGING ANYTHING ON THE TEMPLATE! FOLLOW THE NEXT STEPS!!!

Next, in the GoogleDoc, go to “File” and “Make a Copy.”

A box will appear asking you to rename your copy of the template.  Name it with your first name, last name, and the words Time Capsule Letter.  Example: John Smith Time Capsule Letter

Next, click the blue “Share” button in the top right hand corner of your GoogleDoc screen.  Share it with fordj@cmsd.k12.pa.us.  If you are in Periods 1 or 4/5, also share it with muzikar@cmsd.k12.pa.us.

Now your document is ready for you to edit as you begin typing your rough draft!
